Natal - Pipa
The state of Rio Grande do Norte is a jewel of north eastern Brazil. To start with the capital Natal is a city of joy, with hospitable people, permanently partying and with sun the whole year round. Beautiful white sand dunes and beaches with their natural pools, a rich gastronomic selection and why not talk about the varied arts and handcrafts.
Come and be enchanted by the lagoons formed in the dunes, go for a buggy ride on the beaches, enjoy a ride on a camel, dive in the parrachos de Maracajaú, visit the biggest Caju tree(where cashew nuts come from) in the world and much more!!! |
 |
City tour in Natal and the South coas
Start in the morning from the hotels of Ponte Negra and visit the Via Costeira, arriving in the urban beach district and travelling until Reis Magos (the three kings) Fort, where we make a stop to see the installations. Continuing from there, we cross the neighbourhoods of Santos Reis, Rocas and Ribeira, areas where Natal began its growth, to the city centre and the cathedral of Natal. From there we go to an arts and handicrafts centre with time enough to stop and appreciate the work and maybe do a bit of shopping.
The view from the Morro do Careca (the bald hill) stretches from the outskirts of Natal to Pirangi beach, some 24km, where we have time to visit the largest Caju tree in the world and bathe in the calm waters of this beach. |
 |
Natal By night
Going out at the start of the night to an open air night club where various Brazilian rhythms can be enjoyed, from carimbo of the Amazon to the samba of Rio de Janeiro, on to frevo of Pernambuco, forró of the North East and maculelê and capoeira of Bahia.
The dances of the immigrants are also presented together with a Repentista or Embolador de Coco (coconut), a typical character in Rio Grande do Norte’s popular songs. |
 |
Buggy trip on the North coast
The buggy trip lasts the whole day, taking in the beaches of Redinha, Santa Rita, Jenipabú, Barra do Rio, Gracandu, Pitangui, until we arrive in Jacumã. During the journey, we will climb the famous dunes of Jenipabú, for the most exciting part of trip, manoeuvres of the buggies on the dunes. Stopping at three large lagoons, Jenipabú, Pitangui e Jacumã, formed by the accumulation of water from rain over the dunes, there is time to have a swim in locations that also have bars and leisure infra – structure such as the well known bum skiing. |
 |
Maracajaú
In Maracajaú, localised 70km from Natal, we can experience all the emotion of a beach which is still untouched by urbanisation. Known as the Brazilian Caribbean, the dive in the Parrachos, a 15km² formations of reefs with an average depth of 3m existing 7km from the beach is the great attraction, where floating platforms form the infra-structure of the trip and are worth visiting even if you don’t participate in this activity. There is a free period for lunch. |

Pipa
Leaving the hotels in the morning and taking the motorway BR101, we travel for 90 km to reach the town of Tibau do Sul, where there is on of the principal attractions of our coastline, the beach of Pipa. This beach is considered to be one of the ten most beautiful beaches in Brazil. It combines cliffs with preserved forest (Mata Atlântica, which is different from Amazonian forest) and still exists in parts of our coast. In the complex of beaches that we visit we stop at Cacimbinhas to swim and in the village of Pipa to look at the quaint shops.
The beaches of Amor (Love) and Baia dos Golfinhos (the Bay of Dolphins) can be reached by walking, according to the tide. |
 |
Beach of Bar of the Cunhaú
After breakfast we take the motorway BR101 for approximately 90km to arrive at the Chapel of the Martyrs of Cunhaú, the only Brazilians to have been beatified by the Catholic Church. After a brief stop we enter the estuary of the river Cunhaú, where we can see prawn farms and soon after the beach of Cunhaú. A very agreeable place bathed by river and sea with natural pools and excellent food. The itinerary is completed by a boat trip to the river Cunhaú visiting the mangroves where local fisherman catch fresh water crabs, and we visit enchanting little beaches. |
 |
Formosa bay
Localised on the south coast, close to the state border of Paraíba, is the town of Baia Formosa some 100km distant, a traditional fishing town and also the principal point for surfing. As the name suggests it is a place full of charm and character.
Near the town there is an area of preserved forest (Mata Atlântica) rich in flora and fauna as well as a lake of dark red water consequently called Coca Cola Lake. This trip is completed by visiting various beaches.
Optional buggy ride: Visit an area preserved for the breeding of sea cows (peixe-boi), in the river Guaju. |
 |
Something between a dance and a martial art
We leave in the evening to observe the purest example of popular culture. We go to the outskirts of Natal and enter the world of Capoeira de roda in the community of Capoeira Boa Vontade, a group of capoeiristas (the dancers) and masters( the teachers), who not only teach children the art of capoeira, but also contribute to provide a variety of activities in education and health, thus helping the community. |
 |
Galinhos
A semi-wild beach some 170km from Natal, located on the Costa Branca, the name given to the north coast of the state. Galinhos is a town of 2,000 on a small peninsula, where the only access is by boat, thus the bus remains in public parking at the quay. A combination of mangroves, sand dunes, salt flats and oil fields enchants the tourists who find this fishing village where the only taxis are horse and trap and the only cars are the visiting 4x4. It is a day of pure relaxation, where everything happens in slow motion in this isolated and deserted corner of Rio Grande do Norte’s coast. |
 |
Strolls of Waters
Leaving in buggies we head directly for the south coast. Our first stop will be Búzios beach, where we drive through the dunes and take in the cliffs and wonderful views seen for vantage points such as Barra de Tabatinga. We visit the beach of Camurumpim and on to the Arituba and Carcará lagoons. We then stop for a visit to the Cachaça (typical Brazilian alcoholic drink) distillery with tasting.
Continuing on to the town of Nísia Floresta to go to a disused railway station that has been converted into a restaurant where we have lunch. After a rest we go on to a pottery in the town of Sao Jose de Mipibú. The sugar cane plantations and a forest reserve (Mata Atlântica) complete the scenery of rare beauty and the trip is completed by a visit to the associação de Rendeiras de Alcaçuz (association of women who work with a kind of crochet). |
 |
The soul of the North East
Our trip takes us directly to the south of the state to the town of Brejinho, where we visit a factory producing farinha, a coarse “flour” made from maze. We go on to Parque Pedra da Boca where we take a walk for approximately 40 minutes to see the indigenous paintings, the fauna and flora from this region.
Continuing on to the Bom Jardim farm, a sugar plantation where we have our lunch (included). We will be served typical regional food. After lunch at the same farm we can see the way of life of the old plantation owners called coronéis (colonels) through the furniture and other historic pieces. There are even horses available for a very agreeable trip. |
